The big day

What a superb day – a perfect demonstration of the themes for TEDxMelbourne: community and youth.

TEDxMelbourne came together because of our strong belief in the value of sharing “ideas worth spreading”. Those ideas that engage, inspire, enable and motivate us to be creative, show our genius and connect to our own and each other’s humanity – helping us all to create a new and better world.

On Saturday 20 November, we had over 300 people join us for TEDxMelbourne at the State Library of Victoria. Hundreds more joined us online watching our livestreaming video and live blog with Viocorp, interacting via twitter, and jumping in to the Exit Reality virtual 3D experience – from around Australia and across the globe in places like Boston, Mexico City, Dhaka and Johannesburg.

There was singing, dancing, musical and comedy performances in the TEDxMelbourne Experimedia Experience – hosted by the fabulous Troy and Zara Swindells-Grose. We also spoke to many of the attendees and some of the speakers and performers, Simon Taylor and Hayden Hood capturing some of their thoughts and feelings on video (check out the TEDxMelbourne YouTube channel).

TEDxMelbourne Experimedia Experience (Note: Experimedia now BOOKED OUT)

Thanks to the good people of State Library Victoria, Viocorp and Gary Hegadus Productions, we are also able to offer (for free) the TEDxMelbourne Experimedia Experience.

Hosted by Zara and Troy from Humour Australia, the TEDxMelbourne Experimedia Experience at the State Library will feature: a live stream of TEDxMelbourne straight to a massive high definition screen (6m x 4m); an expo of ideas and community organisations; additional performances from guest entertainers; and a virtual interaction experience.

Experimedia will be the place to be during the TEDxMelbourne session breaks.

The feedback that we got from you last time was that the day was a little too long. So this time we have trimmed things down a little and will only be showing four official TED videos, and one live speaker. So if you have a favourite video that you want to see on the day, make sure you vote for it.

When choosing a video, try to choose one that you feel will appeal to a broad audience, and that will help generate a great discussion. It’s you guys who are going to make the day great.

What is TEDx Melbourne?

TEDx Melbourne is the Melbourne group of a larger collection of independently organised TED events. If you are not familiar with TED, we suggest you head over an have a look. You’ll be impressed.

TEDx events are a mix of live speakers and videos of previous TED speakers from the official event. The format of the day allows for several talks and videos, as well as the all important discussion session in between in which the audience can share their thoughts and opinions on each talk.

What talks will be shown on the day?

We let the the audience choose the talks. Leading up to the event we ask everyone to vote for their favorite TED talks. The talks that are most popular will be screened on the day.

Do I need to watch the talks before the day?

No. All videos will be shown on the day, and there is no need to do any homework. Of course, some people prefer to have already seen the videos that will be showing, so feel free to do so if you wish.

Do I need to be there all day?

No again. You are free to come and go during the day (althugh we ask that people don’t come in and out during each session)

I want to be there all day, so what can I eat?

The all important conference question. There will be coffee and tea and some snacks available at the venue, and there are several places to get lunch all within easy walking distance form the the Monash campus.

Can I film/photograph the event?

Yes please. If you do and if you upload any of your photos and videos, please tag them with #TEDxMelbourne so everyone can find them.

What is expected of me as an attendee?

Glad you asked. We have taken care of all of the housekeeping on the day, but we still need your involvement. The focus of TEDx is on sharing ideas and opinions. We hope that everybody will be able to join in the discussions on the day and share their thoughts on each of the talks. You don’t need to be a subject matter expert, in fact we would prefer you weren’t, we just want you to join in.
