In fact, the simple act of you taking a couple of minutes to read this blog is contributing towards the online buzz around TEDxMelbourne.

And because of people like you, we’re thrilled to report that we’ve reached more than 780,000 users online according to this nifty Amplify Effect tool.

Amplify Effect was an innovation experiment developed as part of AMP’s 2011 innovation and thought-leadership festival, Amplify. Not only does it track things like tweets and Facebook fans, but you can ‘like’ your favorite talks and grab a piece of code for each of our speakers to share on your own blog or website, amplifying the event even further.

We think it’s really cool, and a great way to measure any event’s reach and value.

One of the most remarkable (and possibly tiring) elements for TED is the sheer number of very engaging conversations outside of the talks. I love it. There is never a shortage of amazing conversations from very intelligent, educated and passionate TEDsters. That doesn’t mean we aren’t having fun. We went to the San Andreas Fault to have a party. Here are some of my pics.

Rod and I have the privilege of attending TED Active 2011. Our plan is to have a daily post over the next week (fingers crossed).

Today was the global TEDx organisers event. This is invitation only where the global organisers can get together and share best practice.

I was lucky enough to present on behalf of Australia/New Zealand.

The big day

What a superb day – a perfect demonstration of the themes for TEDxMelbourne: community and youth.

TEDxMelbourne came together because of our strong belief in the value of sharing “ideas worth spreading”. Those ideas that engage, inspire, enable and motivate us to be creative, show our genius and connect to our own and each other’s humanity – helping us all to create a new and better world.

On Saturday 20 November, we had over 300 people join us for TEDxMelbourne at the State Library of Victoria. Hundreds more joined us online watching our livestreaming video and live blog with Viocorp, interacting via twitter, and jumping in to the Exit Reality virtual 3D experience – from around Australia and across the globe in places like Boston, Mexico City, Dhaka and Johannesburg.

There was singing, dancing, musical and comedy performances in the TEDxMelbourne Experimedia Experience – hosted by the fabulous Troy and Zara Swindells-Grose. We also spoke to many of the attendees and some of the speakers and performers, Simon Taylor and Hayden Hood capturing some of their thoughts and feelings on video (check out the TEDxMelbourne YouTube channel).

As a real estate agent said: Thanks for your great presentation. I never knew that a talk about something as basic as measurement could be so funny!

Since the beginning of civilisation measurement has been of utmost importance to humans. We all seek clarity and honesty for all our everyday business and personal measurements – especially to do with our health. As a measurement expert, our TEDxMelbourne presenter Pat Naughtin will explain how we got to where we are now, and how we proceed from here.

Pat Naughtin has studied measurement in many trades and crafts as well as the professions of agriculture, engineering, and science in several countries. The scope of Pat’s knowledge of measurement ranges from boiler making, through piano building and solar energy, to weaving and wool classing. Pat provides practical advice that is immediately applicable for many business owners in their daily business practices – often with substantial cost-cutting effect.

Feedback from NSAA presentation: I listened to you yesterday, and must say I had to agree with you – your content had me totally enthralled! I found your message fascinating – I learnt a lot, and am looking forward to listening again so that I make sure I didn’t miss anything. Well done.

The feedback that we got from you last time was that the day was a little too long. So this time we have trimmed things down a little and will only be showing four official TED videos, and one live speaker. So if you have a favourite video that you want to see on the day, make sure you vote for it.

When choosing a video, try to choose one that you feel will appeal to a broad audience, and that will help generate a great discussion. It’s you guys who are going to make the day great.

Greg has a unique understanding and insight into society’s relentless appetite for the limited resources left on the planet. He details what this means for us today and in 50 years time. He does not just look at the big ticket items of oil, gas and gold. Rather he has a clear focus on what will it mean to you and me when there is not enough arable land to grow the wheat to make our breakfast, our lunch, or to graze cattle so we can have milk in our coffee. These are the basics of our life today and without enough food to feed ourselves we have a very different world and economy. He has been described as the Al Gore of the commodities space.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Greg for the speaker spot at TEDx Melbourne and found his enthusiasm, depth of knowledge, and down to earth way to making complex information simple very refreshing.  While he has been compared to Al Gore, I would describe his attitude as the “Crocodile Hunter” of commodities for his sheer passion on his topic.

Greg travels the world for more than half a year speaking and visiting markets and will share his global perspective with us in his talk.
